Emily Wants to Play Too, a short novel by author Jessica Verdi, tells the story of a girl named Alice who is trying to write her first story. Alice turns to online resources that she isn't sure are reliable, which causes problems for her audience and herself.The protagonist of this book is an eighth grader who is trying to write something original. Her name is Alice and she has to write a book report. She comes up with an idea for a story titled The Hatred of Rusty Fluffers. She gets advice from her aunt and search the internet for ideas. One of the websites she finds says that if you go into a dream, your life will be better. Alice goes onto this website to try and come up with ideas for her story. Alice goes on this website to go into other dimensions and meet other people but it doesn't turn out as planned (the other dimensions were horrible and there were many monsters). After Alice wakes up, she thinks about how she needs to change her story due to all these new experiences. After Alice and her parents decide to rewrite her book, she starts to go over the story and fix all the mistakes. She changed the ending, changed the characters' names, changed her mother's name from Marilyn to Mary Ann, and she added a new character called Emeline who helps change Alice's life.Alice soon discovers that all these changes only makes the story worse as the deadlines are coming up. Eventually she has to rewrite everything again as she thought no one would read it without the revisions unless it was a terrible first draft. The next day, Alice gets her first grade teacher's approval for being a second grade student which surprises Alice as she doesn't know what grade she should be in yet.

The book received a Children's Book Award in 2014 from the International Reading Association.
